More than likely you've seen tutorials that show how to make textures like this. I think a lot of those tutorials oversimplify the process and make some basic mistakes. I also want to do some more advanced tutorials using these textures later on and I don't want less advanced users getting lost.

-I started out with a file 6 in x 2 in. RGB color, 72 dpi

-Make sure your colors are black and white.

-First: Filter>Render>Clouds.

-We don't want so much contrast in the clouds so we are going to flatten it out a little bit.

Image>Adjustments>Brightness/Contrast...

Brightness: -16

Contrast: -58

-These are the numbers I used but they aren't that specific. Experiment and make yourself happy.

-It should looks something like this when you are done

-Next add noise, again this number isn't something I specifically chose, I just went until it looked 'right'.

Filter>Noise>Add Noise...

-Finally go to Filter>Brush Strokes>Angled Strokes...

Direction Balance: 60

Stroke Length: 26

Sharpness: 3

... and you are done.

-This metal texture starts out the same way as the one we just did. So make a new layer and repeat the first 3 steps until you have something that looks like this.

-Next Filter>Blur>Motion Blur...

-With these settings.

-This is where most tutorials stop, but this texture is not complete, not yet.

-Do you see those horizontal lines along the top and bottom? and the stronger lines along the left and right edge? I can't stand that crap. It's out of here.

-Take the move tool (V) and hold Shift then click on one of the corner handles and stretch the layer out, then go to the opposite corner and stretch the other one out about the same amount. Don't Forget to hold shift. It should look kind of like this when you are done.

-NOW its done. Line free and beautiful. Enjoy, I'll be using these 2 textures in later tutorials so save your .psd.

-Discuss this Tutorial on the Forum
