Learn how to make this rusty scanline effect. I got the idea for this when I was making a signature that someone requested on the forum. I wanted to make a scan-line effect with a more organic feel.

 

 

1

a. Start out with a 6 x 1.5 in canvas, RGB color, 72 ppi.

b. Hit D to reset your colors to black and white. Then go to Filter>Render>Clouds...

a. Now make some text (your name) using the text tool (T).

-Make sure the text is fairly large. This is important because we are going to be blurring this text and we don't want the letters to run together and become illegible.

a. Now go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur...

b. Unless you have already rasterized your text, this message will come up. Hit ok

c. Use a Radius of about 2.1 pixels

d. Next go to Layer>Merge Down to merge your layers or hit Ctrl + E.

a. Go to Filter>Render>Difference Clouds

b. You may have to hit it a couple times to get something you like. Make sure that the text isn't too washed out when you do the filter.

a. Go to Filter>Sketch>Halftone Pattern...

Size: 1
Contrast: 0
Pattern Type: Line

b. Next go to Filter>Stylize>Find Edges

c. Then go to Image>Adjustments>Invert or just hit Ctrl + I

a. Thats the basic shape of the design, the rest from here is adding texture and color. If you can't make out the text you started with you might want to start over.

b. Go to Image>Adjustments>Color Balance... or hit Ctrl + B
use these settings:

a. Make a new layer and go to Filter>Render>Clouds.

b.Then change the Blend Mode of the layer to Color Burn

c. Go to Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation...
use these settings:

Colorize: Checked
Hue: 0
Saturation: 100
Lightness: 75

now we have more of a rust color going.

a. Now we are going to put a border on the whole thing. Start by making a new layer.

b. Go to Select>All or hit Ctrl + A to select the canvas.

c. Go to Edit>Stroke...
use these settings:

d. Now take the Magic Wand Tool (W) and click in the middle of the canvas, this will select the area inside the stroke you just made.

e. Next go to Select>Modify>Contract...

contract the selection 2 pixels.

f. Now stroke the selection again with the same settings.

a. Now take the Magic Wand Tool (W) again and click inside the two lines you just made, you might have to zoom in to get the selection right.

b. Make a new layer and position it under the color burn layer in the layers pallette.

c. Go to Filter>Render>Clouds.

d. Next go to Image>Adjustments>Color Balance... or hit Ctrl + B
use these settings:
